Lore notes:

  • The Space Station 13 universe is a distinct universe based on our own. It is not an alternate universe, it is not the same universe at a different time, it is a completely seperate, fictional universe.
  • The lore and presentation of the game can be thought of a translation from the original universe into a format that we can interpret in our own. Terms like 'Human' and 'Humanity' are translations, and while these things may be based on the objects present in our own world, they may not be identical.

Background

This section provides an outline of the wider background for the basis of the Beestation storyline. This section provides a brief explanation of relevant history and the facts of this world.

Wider Setting

The events of Space Station 13 start in a triple star system, Nexus Caeli. Nexus Caeli is the system in which humanity was born. It is made of two systems: Geminae (Nexus Caeli A and Nexus Caeli B), and Nexus Caeli C (nicknamed Solivagus) which has its own set of orbiting bodies. Humanity comes from a planet orbiting the Geminae group named Tellune, while Space Station 13 takes place in the Nexus Caeli C.

The two systems orbit each other in an elliptical orbit, meaning that the transfer window between the 2 systems is limited, but even during the transfer window, the shortest travel time using modern technology is roughly 7 years. Typical transfer windows occur every ~23 years, with transfer windows lasting for 7 months.

Paramilitary Coalitions

Tellune Purity Force

A paramilitary group against both the construction of the constellation, and space expansion as a whole. They believe that the lack of resources available on Tellune is a sign that the consumption of humanity has gone too far, and that it needs to be scaled back rather than expanding into space. Many members come from unstable or developing countries that are being exploited by the first-world corporations. They fund themselves by siphoning goods supplied by beneficiary countries during civil war, and through back-hand deals with a major nation sanctioned by the Tellune Council.

Governance

Tellune Council

The highest form of government, made up of a committee representing national governments. The council is primarilly controlled by wealthy, first-world nations leading to resentment from countries that are either not well-represented, or not present in the council due to sanctionary action.

The Tellune Council possessses a shared military force which performs defense operations around Tellune and manages orbital policing within the Geminae cluster. They have almost no presence in the Solivagus system due to its distance, however some specialists are sometimes sent out for the sake of auditing and investigation. As a result of this, in the criminal world, the Solivagus system is often seen as a safe haven and the end-goal of wanted persons, though reaching the system is incredibly difficult due to the limited transfer windows and strong policing of the routes on the Geminae side.

Local Setting

This section provides details about the local setting of Space Station 13, including the planet that it orbits.

Lavaland

The Constellation

The Constellation is a series of planned, active, or retired space stations in orbit around Lavaland. A full constellation of 24 stations is planned, which would provide full sensor coverage from six stations at any point on the ground. As of this time, there are thirteen stations.

Transfer windows are relative to the first station.

Caption text
Station Operation Time Status
Space Station 1 Transfer Window +1, Abandoned at TW+2 The first station constructed, due to its small size it was assembled entirely within the Geminae before being moved to the Solivagus system during a transfer window. The station was successful, conducting ground surveys and using asteroids for resource processing. Being the first station, there were of course unforseen issues and the small crew of the station returned to Geminae when the next transfer window came around. The station now provides sensor support in an uncrewed state.
Space Station 2
Space Station 3
Space Station 4 TW+2 to TW+3 The first station constructed with a ringed design to provide artificial gravity. Only one quarter of the station was assembled before progress was paused due to funding issues.
Space Station 5
Space Station 6
Space Station 7
Space Station 8
Space Station 9
Space Station 10
Space Station 11
Space Station 12
Space Station 13 TW+9 to Current (TW+12) The largest and most advanced station ever successfully constructed, with a maximum capacity of over 20 crew. Space Station 13 was designed to perform in-orbit experiments and provide a base of operations for large scale mineral extraction. Crew often work in shifts, swapping out with its more calm sister station, 12.

Further stations are either in early planning phases and have not been officially approved.
