Apids are a race of bipedal bees from the jungle planet of Saltu. Due to their large bodies, they have lost the ability to fly, but can dash short distances.

Apids are a race of bipedal bees from the jungle planet of Saltu. Due to their large bodies, they have lost the ability to fly, but can dash short distances. They are susceptible to extreme damage from temprature-extreme enviroments, and cannot wear neck equipment. However, they can breathe in atmospheres of up to 8kPA thanks to their many spiracles, providing plenty of air to their lungs. They also take more stamina damage than a usual human.
Apids are a very recently discovered race. The first contact with them comes from a botanical NT expedition to a jungle-covered planet. They are seemingly related to space bees, but a test of their genome has shown that they bear no real biological resemblance to species used aboard SS13, and the race naming is simply a coincidence due to the first contact.
 
Apid society was very primitive, with almost no technological advancement, until encountered by this botanical expedition. This contact, happening well after the Species Equality Act was passed, gave Nanotrasen the opportunity to educate this species and integrate them into the workforce. Today, you can find them working various jobs all around Nanotrasen, and even aboard the top-secret Space Station 13.

NT expedition 113, a forward team of biologists and botanists sent to planet 2491 TR13 in the year 2506, discovered a sentient race. This race, looking outwardly similar to apids in-use on space stations, was brought in forcefully by an ERT to be tested more thoroughly. This new information showed a very close common ancestor with space bees (Apis locus), though how this is possible on a completely untouched planet is as-of-now unknown. It seems that these Apids also share a few common traits with Apis locus, one of which being a colonial social structure with a central ruler. From rudimentary translations of Apidite, only one colony of Apids exists on this planet, with a ruler commonly titled “The Great Queen”. Recordings from recon missions taking place near Apid settlements have been translated and depict this “queen” being a sort of deity to the Apids, seemingly filling nearly all needs of Apid society. Exploration of the planet heading in the direction of the queen has been met with strangely hostile flora, fauna, and Apids, forcing an emergency evacuation.

Apids are an optional playable race. They attack with slashes from their stingers, but don’t deal any extra damage. They’re able to dash a short distance using their wings and can craft [[Guide to food and drinks#Honeycomb|honeycombs]] using sugar. These honeycombs can be broken into [[Guide to construction#Wax|wax]], used to make [[Guide to construction#Wax|wax floortiles]]. However, they take more burn, toxin, and stamina damage, as well as passing out in the cold and when exposed to smoke.
 
Random names for Apids always have the first name starting with a “B,” and the last names seem to be many different flower types.
 
Note that as an Apid, the AI does not consider you human and is not obligated to listen to you and an Asimov AI will often respond lethally should they find you harming a human, however, this also means the AI can allow you to put yourself into harm's way in a positive manner, such as opening an airlock exposed to space to save someone.
 
You can speak in Apidite, a language understood by Apids (as well as silicons and the Curator) by using the language menu. To speak on the radio in Apidite, use the radio code while speaking the language.
